A force of 1 gram wt on the area of the OW (3.2 mm 2 ) creates a pressure of 3 kPa. This pressure exceeds the internal pressure of the outer hair cells (1 kPa) and causes them to temporarily collapse. This turns down their sensitivity and the cochlear amplifier is switched off.
